And the institutional Church, as it became more patriarchal from the fourth century onward, systematically dismantled that technology. Muraresku calls the shift moving from pharmacological Christianity to placebo Christianity.

Pip: That’s a phrase that will haunt a few seminaries.

Mara: The argument doesn’t stop with Greece. The post traces the same pattern back ten thousand years to Göbekli Tepe — skull cults, snake iconography, beer residues in stone vessels, and architecture aligned to solar and stellar markers. The same complex appears in the Jordan Valley dolmen fields and at Rujm el-Hiri, the Wheel of Giants east of the Sea of Galilee, built from more than 40,000 tons of basalt.

Pip: And then the argument jumps the Atlantic — pure copper from Lake Superior, the Windover bog people of Florida preserving brain matter from the same deep time window, Hopewell earthworks in the Ohio Valley. The silence in mainstream archaeology about these connections is treated as data, not absence.

Mara: All of it feeds the central allegory: a mouse dropped into a glass enclosure with a snake. The mouse eventually stops fleeing and goes still near the water dish, as if ordinary proximity to life might persuade the predator to look elsewhere. The post is direct — “The snake, of course, is not persuaded. It simply waits and then eats.”

Pip: Humanity as the mouse. Skull cults, ritual sex, psychedelic sacraments — all forms of mouse-stillness.

Mara: Christianity, in this reading, broke the cycle not by denying the hostile powers but by declaring them defeated and offering a different posture: moral agency, individual responsibility, direct relationship with a God who does not require constant feeding of death. The concern about the modern psychedelic renaissance follows from this — the experiences at Johns Hopkins and NYU are real, but the entities contacted in those states may not be friends of the human project.

Pip: Four archaeological clusters get flagged for serious future funding: Göbekli Tepe, the Jordan Valley dolmens, the Lake Superior copper systems, and the Windover populations. The book The Politics of Heaven is framed as the effort to force that conversation open — because the secular publishing world, the post argues, prefers to treat Christianity as the problem rather than as a partial solution to an older and darker one.
